Entry #10

Today is the final day of the semester! I can’t believe that it’s already over. I enjoyed taking this class. I learned a lot from discussions, major assignments, and feedback from my peers and professor. What benefited me the most was the feedback I have received. Without it, I would not have noticed that my work might be missing essential information or that it can be improved by adding certain things. The feedback I’ve received has also helped me feel more confident and secure in my work. For example, in the technical description and even the lab report, I felt …

Self Assessment

Surprisingly, this semester flew by. I can’t believe that it’s already the last day. I believe that I learned a lot from this class. The discussions and assignments taught me a lot. In this paper, I will discuss how my perceptions of writing have changed this semester.             For the first assignment, I had to write a technical description. Everyone had to choose an object and describe its function or purpose. For my technical description, I chose to write about the Nintendo Switch. The target audience included Nintendo fans, teenagers, family-oriented people, and gamers. I described everything that’s included with the …

Engineering Proposal

Date: May 22, 2021 To: Boston Dynamics From: Ayah Ali Subject: Robotic Guide Dogs Purpose   This proposal has two aims:   The purpose of this proposal is to convince Boston Dynamics to create robotic guide dogs for the visually impaired. This proposal also aims to address the flaws of owning actual guide dogs and how robotic guide dogs would be a better alternative. Summary             Life can be very difficult for the visually impaired. Imagine being blind and unable to freely move around due to the constant fear of getting hurt or getting lost. This is enough to convince a blind …

Entry #9

May 24, 2021     Last week, I completed my engineering proposal on robotic guide dogs for the visually impaired. The purpose, introduction, and summary sections were simple for me to do. I struggled most with writing under the proposed tasks. This is mainly because I couldn’t find much research to back up my ideas since the topic is still new. I had to get most of my sources from companies and reliable news sources. My proposal was directed to Boston Dynamics which is an engineering and robotics company. I chose this company because it was the first one I saw …

Entry #8

May 10, 2021 Last week, we had to brainstorm ideas for our engineering proposals. I had a difficult time picking a topic since there are many things that I believe need improvement. At first, I was going to propose that New York City should add women-only cars in the train system. This already exists in Japan and I really liked the concept of it. It would allow for women to feel safer when traveling alone while also reducing sexual harassment cases. Many women all around the world fear traveling alone. It’s even worse when traveling by train, where most times …

Lab Report

Genetically Modified Food: Risks & Benefits. Does the Good Outweigh the Bad? Abstract Today, when grocery shopping, it is much more common to find genetically modified foods than organic foods. It makes people question why foods are even genetically modified. Genetically modified foods are created for numerous reasons. Some being greater crop yield, more nutritious food, resistance to insect damage, etc. While GM foods come with their benefits, many believe that consuming them may be harmful and can lead to medical issues such as an increase in infertility, allergies, a higher risk of cancer, etc. This lab report will discuss …

Entry #7

May 3, 2021 It’s been about a week since I’ve completed my lab report. The feedback that I’ve received from my peers and professor has been very helpful to my final lab report. The information that I found was pretty shocking. In my lab report, I focused the effects of GMOs based on the effect it has on rats, its nutritional value when compared to organic food, and whether the pesticides being sprayed on the crops are harmful to the environment. In the study with the rats, it revealed that the group that was fed only genetically modified foods grew …

Entry #6

April 15, 2021 It is currently day three of Ramadan, so my energy levels are lower than usual. I have less time to complete my school work since I really want to focus on religion this month, but so far I have completed my assignments. I hope that I can remain productive and motivated for the rest of this month. Today, I did some quick research before writing my outline. I ended up gathering up to around twelve sources. I’m not fully sure if I am going to use all of them, but I will figure it out as I …

Entry #5

April 13, 2021 I’m posting this pretty late, but last week we began brainstorming for our lab reports. I’m not really sure of what exactly a lab report is supposed to look like, but I plan on reading the requirements and looking at actual lab reports. For my discussion post, I chose to write about GMO foods. I don’t know if I want to stick with this topic, but it’s pretty interesting. It’s so much more difficult to find organic foods than GMO foods nowadays, which was pretty shocking to me when I was younger. As someone who trusts nature, …

Memo

To: Consolidated Edison (Con Edison) From: Shekhar Pokhrel (Topic Supervisor), Fatmah Hassanin (Submission Manager), and Ayah Ali (Research Director) Subject: Cogeneration to Prevent Steam Pipe Accidents and Dangers Date: March 29, 2021 Purpose: The purpose of this memo is to address the potential dangers of steam pipes. To solve this issue, we will describe how heat recovery steam generation, more specifically, cogeneration generators will prevent such dangers while also providing many benefits. Summary: The steam pipes in NYC undoubtedly provide many benefits, some being the heating and cooling of buildings, cooking, and sterilizing, but this doesn’t mean that there aren’t any …
